Reds, Snook, Trout & others
Spent yesterday out on the water with Capt. Chad Gamble of Hook & ladder Charters on our regular trip when we are here on Anna Maria Island. Our usual date is the 5th but weather conditions moved us along a bit to our daughter Rachels birthday 9th October. After Chad throwing a net for some bait we headed off to 'Rachels Spot' with dolphins chasing off to the side of the boat. Flowers laid on the water, some favourite songs played, Oreos eaten & memories talked about then it was off to do some fishing with full agreement of my girl.
Joyce (Mrs G) as always was first to catch a slot sized Red Drum (red fish), great way to start the fishing. Fly & bait fish were the order of my day and produced Jacks up to 2lbs, Spanish Mackerel, Gag Grouper, Needle Fish (which shredded my shirt in 1 bite), Ladyfish. Mrs G also had an encounter with a 25lb Stingray which we managed to get to the side of the boat before a safe release for all.
Obviously I saved the best till last when we moved again and I was hooked up onto a PB Snook, again slot sized and around the 9lb mark, what a great fight. New spot and after missing a good few bites I managed to get one to stick, yeah another Snook, slightly smaller that was quickly released to grow bigger. Happy days & memories made.

A Nice Couple of Days
A variety of snaps from the last couple of days, another nest excavation, look how deep the turtles lay the eggs and just think that the hatchlings have got to dig there way out from under all that sand, what a start to a lifes journey. Beautiful sunset tonight just when we thought we wouldn't get one. Plenty of these big eyed Ladyfish around, they really do fight hard for their size.

Ladys & Macks
Sometimes you have to keep trying despite the conditions, 25+mph winds .sea weed covering the inshore area and bait fish are hard to spot never mind throw a net to, especially when you're not very good at it. Still it turn out Ok despite losing more than I landed, a mixture of Ladyfish, Jacks & Spanish Mackeral came to the beach plus a good few more that threw the hook in the surf.
Non Fishing Just Turtles
Early rise this morning to meet up with volunteers from Anna Maria Turtle & shorebird Monitoring as they excavated a couple of turtle nests that had been laid about 6 weeks ago. A great bunch of people who give their time for free from May to October walking the beach of Anna Maria looking for tracks that a turtle has come ashore and possibly laid her nest of around 100 eggs for the generations to follow. Sadly not all end in success as can be seen from these photos they shown unhatched egg which was done to Hurricane Irma that hit the island and covered the nests with water BUT sometimes Mother Nature helps out and some of the eggs had hatched and the hatchlings had made it safely to the sea to begin there 25 year adventure before setting flippers back on the shores of AMI again for future generations to gaze and wonder at.
